Artist’s signature constitutes acceptance of all site conditions and liability
ELIGIBILITY: Resident artists of Connecticut – no work previously exhibited at the SMM in any show is eligible.
MEDIA: Paintings, drawings, mixed media, sculpture, and graphics including photography.
ENTRY: Two entries per artist. ALL WORK MUST BE READY TO INSTALL. Two-dimensional works must be framed, glazed, screw eyes/wire – multi-part works must be assembled as one unit. NO SAWTOOTH HANGERS. No work greater than 60 inches in any dimension. Maximum weight: Two-dimensional 80 lbs – Three-dimensional 150 lbs. The SMM staff reserve the right to remove from consideration any object that does not meet these criteria. The Museum Director may override any selection made by the juror. WRITE LEGIBLY.
ENTRY FEE: $15 for the first entry, $10 for the second entry. Checks payable to the Slater Memorial Museum. Friends of the Slater Museum may submit first entry free of charge. Fees are not refundable.
DELIVERY: Entries will be received in the Atrium (adjacent to and to the north of the SMM, enter through glass doors and follow signs) on ONE DAY ONLY, Saturday January 20, from 11 am to 3 pm. Affix entry form to lower left back of work, so that printed form faces lower front right. Grey box need not be visible. Text below must be visible when entry is installed (hanging on wall or displayed on pedestal). Refer to illustration on entry form. Do not ship or bring entries during unspecified hours. In the event of inclement weather, entries will be received Sunday, January 21 from 11 am to 3 pm. If this occurs, the announcement will be made via the Museum website, NFA website, Facebook and outgoing telephone message at (860) 425-5563.
NOTIFICATION: Judging will take place Monday, January 22, 2018 weather permitting. Artists will receive email notification when results are posted online, no later than 4:00 pm on Tuesday, January 23. Results will be sorted by museum-issued entry number and will include the last 4 digits of artist’s phone number. DO NOT PHONE THE MUSEUM.
Declined work may be collected Wednesday, January 24 through Friday, January 26 from 8:30 am – 3:30 pm: Saturday and Sunday, January 27 & 28 from 1 pm – 3:30 pm. All declined work must be collected at these dates/times at the MAIN RECEPTION DESK/VISITOR CENTER of the museum. A $5 per day late fee will be charged thereafter.
Accepted work will be displayed in the Converse Gallery through Friday, March 16, 2018. Displayed works must be collected Saturday, March 17 or Sunday, March 18, from 1 pm – 3:30 pm or Monday, March 19, from 8:30 am – 3:30 pm at the MAIN RECEPTION DESK/VISITOR CENTER. A $5 per day late fee will be charged thereafter.
SELECTION: Our 2018 juror is Michelle Hargrave. Hargrave is Deputy Director at the New Britain Museum of American Art and has seventeen years of experience leading complex exhibition projects, international partnerships, and institutional development. In her former position as the Curator and China Initiative Project Director at The American Federation of Arts in New York, Hargrave worked with internationally renowned collections, institutions, and curators in around the world to develop and implement traveling art exhibitions at multiple domestic and international venues. Hargrave holds an M.A. from the Bard Graduate Center in the history of decorative arts, design, and culture.
AWARDS AND RECEPTION: Up to $1000 may be awarded in prizes, including an award from the Katherine Forest Crafts Foundation. Refer to website for updates on prizes in specific media. Award winners will be announced at 2 pm during the exhibition opening reception on Sunday, January 28, 2018, from 1 – 3 pm.
SALES AND PUBLICITY: Sales handled through the SMM will be subject to a 20% convenience fee. Artists agree to allow the SMM to reproduce and/or publish artwork for exhibit publicity and promotional purposes unless written refusal is submitted.
LIABILITY: All entries will receive careful handling by competent staff; however, the Slater Memorial Museum, or anyone connected with this exhibition, cannot be held responsible for the loss or damage to any entry submitted and received subject to this condition.
DIRECTIONS: Traveling East on Route 2, turn right at the traffic light at Washington Street. Continue on Rte. 2 East and turn left at the traffic light at Chelsea Parade. Traveling west on Route 2, drive through downtown Norwich, and turn right at the light at Chelsea Parade. The Slater Memorial Museum is on the campus of the Norwich Free Academy.
