Alexey von Schlippe: Expressions of Mind and Soul

Alexey von Schlippe painting

From the mind of renowned Russian-American artist and art educator, Alexey von Schlippe (1915-1988), Slater Museum is proud to feature nearly two dozen works by von Schlippe spanning an integral part of his career from the 1950s to 1980s.

The museum acquired these works more than 30 years ago from von Schlippe’s estate after his passing in 1988 and from his wife Xenia von Schlippe in 1990. Other works have entered the collection since then from private collections.

Before he immigrated to America, von Schlippe studied art throughout Germany, Finland, Italy, and Belgium and became highly interested in Eastern Orthodox Iconography and Realism. This show will explore these themes which von Schlippe replicates in a series of portraits and landscapes that highlight both the mind and soul of the artist.
