What:

Join Slater Memorial Museum for a digital program presented by critically acclaimed filmmaker, Christian de Rezendes. Over the past 9 years, de Rezendes has been directing an eight-episode historical documentary series, Slatersville: America’s First Mill Village chronicling the development of the United States' first planned mill community.  Slatersville is due to premiere in 2022 on Rhode Island PBS.

The program features behind-the-scenes elements with de Rezendes and an exclusive preview of the series' segment, “The John Fox Side", profiling Norwich’s John Fox Slater and how the story of Slatersville extended into Connecticut and Norwich. Interviews and expert analyses show how John Fox Slater developed his industrial enterprises alongside the Rhode Island sector founded by his uncle, Samuel Slater, and his father, John Slater. “The John Fox Side” explores the cultural influence of the Industrial Revolution in New England and the impact on the African American community of these economic changes.  Also discussed is the impact of the "John F. Slater Fund for the Education of Freedmen" on educational opportunities for African Americans and historically black colleges and universities.

The program will be held via Zoom and is recommended for participants ages 12 and up.  Registration is free and is capped at 100 participants.
