The Return of the Pharaoh, From the Reminiscences of John H. Watson, MD by Nicholas Meyer
A perfect summertime read - a classic style mystery with a spice of humor. You will find themes of recent and old pandemics (TB), a "newly discovered narrative" of Sherlock Holmes and his confidant Watson, Egyptology, mummies, treasure hunters and archaeology, as well as the role of feminism in a Victorian marriage. Watson's confessional tone invites you to lend your own advice to him as he explores back streets of Cairo alone at midnight, or crawls inside a tomb, or narrowly avoids doom and skulduggery. You will be pleased that the early 20th century settings are carefully researched, the history of Egyptian art is presented accurately, and some important figures in archeology make their appearance.
