Sculpture of the head of the ancient Athenian philosopher Socrates

Classical. Cast of the original in the Vatican Museum, Rome. Roman copy of a Greek original, marble, c. 350-330 BCE.

Socrates stands as one of the pinnacle founders of traditional western philosophy and thought, though ironically he was not known to have written extensively. Most information and research on Socrates is learned through his students, contemporaries, and subsequent generations of thinkers and writers. His student Plato portrayed Socrates in his many Dialogues as a great thinker who developed modern foundations of ethics, debate, and discussion around issues.
